Flood Damage

Below is information you need to know if you have been affected by the recent storms.

A line of severe thunderstorms with torrential rain passing through Milwaukee County and the City of Wauwatosa caused numerous rivers and creeks to flood. The City of Wauwatosa has activated their emergency operations center in response to reports of flooding and basement backups.This is additional information to assist businesses and homeowners with this situation:If your home has been damaged, the City will establish a Damage Report contact number in order to collect damage reports and assess the appropriate response. Please check the City website for updated information.The Public Works Yard is open and will accept flood damaged materials from City residents with proof of residency. On Monday the yard will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.Once the water has receded, homeowners should observe precautions when working with flood damaged materials. It should be assumed that all materials that have come in contact with flood water may be contaminated. Anyone encountering flood water or working with flood damaged materials should minimize skin exposure by wearing rubber boots and rubber gloves during clean-up, avoid access to area by children and pets, and wash hands and any exposed skin.As announced previously, please continue to observe the following precautions:

  • If you have additional questions, contact the Information and Referral Line at 479-8939. The line will be staffed 24 hours per day until further notice. If the line is busy, please leave a message and staff will respond.
  • Flooding can be an extremely hazardous situation, please observe the following precautions: Do not enter any flood waters! It only takes 6 inches of water to knock a person off their feet. It is possible that manhole covers may have been displaced due to rising water creating a hazard for persons walking through the water.
  • Flood waters may be contaminated with bacteria.
  • Homes experiencing flooding or basement backups should contact WE Energies if the water reaches the level of furnace or the electrical box. Electrical problems should be reported to (800) 662-4797 and Gas leaks to (800) 261-5325. Stay out of the water and do not enter a flooded basement.
  • If there is overland flooding, do not attempt to pump the water out of your basement, this could result in structural damage to foundations.
