Augustina Piel awarded TETNA’s annual neighborhood scholarship

Thanks to generous donations from our members, TETNA is proud to offer a scholarship to one of our neighborhood’s graduating high school seniors. TETNA honors a bright young person from our neighborhood whose essay response best represents TETNA’s philosophy of providing  “a welcoming and nurturing environment … and sense of community through shared interests.”

Augustina Piel

This year, the scholarship committee recommended and the TETNA board approved awarding the $750 scholarship to Wauwatosa East High School senior Augustina Piel.

Augustina is at the top of her class, with a 4.0 GPA. She has been a stage manager for over 14 theater productions at Longfellow, East and community theater. She is an Ambassador Girl Scout and participated in many activities in our local community with her troop. She loves reading and writing and works part-time at the Wauwatosa Public Library.

In voting for Augustina for the scholarship, a member of the scholarship committee said: “Her descriptions of neighborhood life – whether by sharing a book at a free little library, babysitting neighborhood kids or working with neighbors to find a lost pet – demonstrate that she understands the value of community.”

Augustina plans to attend Stern Business School at New York University in the fall to study business and political economy.

We have many incredible students in our area, and this is one small way we can support and recognize their efforts. The wide array of talents and contributions of all of the students who applied for the scholarship impressed the selection committee. We are a lucky community to have so many amazing young people as neighbors.

Zack Goehner is TETNA’s Volunteer of the Year

Zack Goehner, right, receives one of the signs he designed from Ryan Wallace, TETNA’s treasurer, at the 2019 Annual Meeting.

We have taken time at the past couple Annual Meetings to honor one deserving neighbor as our Volunteer of the Year. Our in-person Annual Meeting was canceled this year, we still are pleased to announce that our Volunteer of the Year is Zack Goehner, a graphics designer who contributed the design on our beautiful lamppost signs and has continued to share his skills and talents with the neighborhood.

Zack worked his design into a special edition TETNA T-shirt, which was offered as an add-on during our fall membership drive in a successful sale. He also has been reimagining our website, which is one of the TETNA board’s top priorities of the coming year. And he has agreed to serve on the board starting this year.

We can’t thank Zack enough for all his hard work and dedication to the neighborhood, and we hope to be able to present him with his Volunteer of the Year certificate at a future TETNA event when gathering in person becomes possible. Well done, Zack!

TETNA board cancels Run Tosa Run 2020 over COVID-19 pandemic

The following message was sent April 6 to all who registered for this year’s Run Tosa Run.

Run Tosa Run registrants,

With public health advisories recommending against public gatherings, to slow the spread of COVID-19, races of all sizes and distances have been canceled or postponed in recent weeks. Tosa East Towne Neighborhood Association waited to see if it would be possible to continue as planned with Run Tosa Run on May 16, but at this point, it seems clear that those plans can’t go forward. The TETNA board, regrettably, has decided to cancel this year’s Run Tosa Run.

Although we considered postponing the race until later in the year, that option would have come with a continued level of uncertainty. All of us hope that conditions improve soon so that social distancing precautions can be safely lifted, but not knowing when that will happen makes it difficult to plan any future event, especially one that requires a certain amount of logistical moving parts. That said, we look forward to bringing the race back again for 2021.

Every year, TETNA has three main goals with Run Tosa Run: to bring our neighborhood together, to promote all our neighborhood has to offer (especially its businesses) and to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin. Each year, we donate 100 percent of net proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Charities, and despite the cancelation of this year’s race, we’d still like to continue making an annual donation.

In these uncertain times, we know many families suddenly are dealing with financial hardships times. Even a $25 race fee may seem more significant now than it did earlier in the year. With that in mind, we’re inviting runners to consider one of two options:

  • You may request a full refund of your race registration by emailing that request to runtosarun@gmail.com, and we will process that refund in the near future.
  • For any runners who don’t respond by May 1, we will use your race fees as part of the donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities. If you’d prefer that your fee becomes part of our donation, you can simply do nothing.

If you would like to make an additional direct donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities as part of this fundraising effort, you can do so online here.

This was to be our seventh straight year hosting Run Tosa Run. Although we’re sad to announce this one-year hiatus, we’re grateful for the support of sponsors BelAir Cantina, GRAEF, Lutheran Home, Mathnasium and Shine Salon. And we hope all our runners are able to continue to get out running while also following the state’s “Safer at Home” policy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sincerely,
David Paulsen
Run Tosa Run race director
TETNA board president

Neighbors like you are needed to join TETNA’s board

Tosa East Towne Neighborhood Association remains an active institution serving your neighborhood, by providing local information to members, hosting events and working to improve the quality of life for residents. This is a completely volunteer association made up of neighbors like you, and we are looking for additional neighbors to step up and serve a term on the board.

This is a great way to get active in your neighborhood, and the time commitment starts with just attendance at our monthly meetings, which typically are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. The board oversees the great work of TETNA’s event coordinators, and board members typically volunteer at some of those events when they are able. We also encourage board members to share ideas for new events, initiatives or communications.

New terms start in May. If you would like to learn more about serving on the board, please email info@tosaeasttowne.org.

The new board usually is elected in April at TETNA’s Annual Meeting. The coronavirus pandemic continues to shake up our spring schedule, and that includes the Annual Meeting, which previously was scheduled for April 15 at Tosa Bowl & Bun. Instead, the TETNA board is working to facilitate the official functions of the Annual Meeting — such as budget presentation and board election — online and by email.

When it becomes possible to gather again in person, we look forward to rescheduling an Annual Meeting-style event and other fun activities that showcase our neighborhood. In the meantime, please remember your neighbors while you are staying “Safer at Home.”

Support East Tosa restaurants with takeout and delivery during COVID-19

Restaurants and bars have closed for dine-in service as part of the widespread efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, but many of our favorite establishments in East Tosa remain open for takeout, curb-side pickup and/or delivery. Help support these local business by continuing to enjoy their great food while staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Info is only as current as we have time to keep it current, so check ahead with the restaurant to be sure take-out and delivery is still available.

If you are aware of additional East Tosa businesses offering takeout and delivery, please let us know at info@tosaeasttowne.org.
